This swing gear box and motor came from a Komatsu PC210-8 crawler excavator. The swing box or swing drive is a critical component that controls the full-circle rotation of the excavator cab. Without it, the excavator can only dig in a single direction, which is not ideal by any measure.
With the problem potentially residing in the swing drive or the motor side, we had some investigating to do. This involved dismantling both units and identifying any faults in the parts.
When we received the unit, we dismantled, cleaned and inspected every part to identify the fault.
The motor side was stripped first and our engineer could see that there was substantial wear to both the cylinder block and valve plate, this is what was the cause of the poor performance. d.
The gearbox side was then stripped. Luckily, there were no signs of wear to the working parts, however, as the unit was stripped we gave our customer the option to have the unit completely cleaned with the bearings and seals replaced before being rebuilt, or, to just have it rebuilt. The customer chose to have it fully reconditioned.
With the replacement motor parts and a reconditioned gearbox, the function was good as new. Our client was pleased with the outcome of our investigation and happy to have a working swing motor for their Komatsu excavator once again.
