This client had been let down by their BOMAG BMP 8500 compactor. Their whole unit had stopped moving, a fault which they traced to a damaged travel system, so they removed it and sent it to us for inspection. We were able to quickly diagnose several issues, replace damaged components with OEM parts, recondition others and clean the whole unit, ready for reinstallation.
The BOMAG BMP 8500 is a remote-controlled, multipurpose compactor with a weight of just under 1.5 tonnes. It’s powered by a four-cylinder diesel motor, which in turn drives an advanced hydraulic travel system. Its high weight means it’s very difficult to move manually without this travel system.
In this case, the hydraulic travel system had stopped transferring power to the drive wheels, rendering the whole unit immobile. With their heavy unit stuck in the field, this client needed a quick, accurate diagnosis and a reliable resolution to get them back on track.
After this client’s BMP 8500 hydraulic travel system failed, they promptly sent it to us for inspection. Our engineers wasted no time in carefully disassembling the unit, and found a fractured pipe, wear to both flanges and damage to the threads inside the drive shaft. Each of these issues would need to be addressed to get the BMP 8500 mobile again.
The fractured pipe was replaced with a brand-new OEM component. We were able to rework and reclaim the worn flanges, and the damaged driveshaft was repaired using Heli-Coil to restore the internal threads.
To help prevent future breakdowns, we also stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the internal gear pump and Eaton motor, and replaced all bearings and seals with new genuine parts.
Finally, the whole unit was cleaned and reassembled, looking and working as though it were fresh off the assembly line. Before dispatching it back to the client, we tested it by simulating normal working conditions using our dedicated in-house test rig.
After we finished restoring and testing the client’s BOMAG BMP 8500 travel system, it was returned to them ready to be reinstalled and put right back to work. The client received a thorough yet quick repair for their unit’s travel system, enabling them to get it moving under its own power again.
