Frequently Asked Questions

Final drives give power to the wheels of hydraulic vehicles, usually ones with tracks, such as excavators and other machinery. It’s the last part of what’s called the “drive train”.

The train consists of the following:

  • Engine – This generates power used in the hydraulic components and system.
  • Transmission – Takes power generated from the engine and transmits it to drive wheels.
  • Drive Shaft – Transfers power from the transmission to other hydraulic components via the ring gear, which is made up of both planetary gears and the sun gear.
  • Differential – This allows for different speeds.
  • Final Drive – The final drive adjusts the speeds of the vehicle.

A ratio refers to the number of times the driveshaft must rotate to turn the wheels once. A higher final drive ratio essentially means a lower top speed. The reason why you would want to do this is to increase the torque of your wheels. Increasing torque allows you to move heavier loads at the expense of speed.

A torque converter allows you to stop a vehicle in gear without stalling the vehicle. It provides more torque when starting from a standstill or accelerating.

We ensure your drive is cleaned, degreased and completely dismantled, with all parts thoroughly inspected. A report and accurate quote is produced and awaiting your go-ahead. All casings will be shot blasted and hydraulic components to be re-used will be machine lapped to ensure they meet the required standards before final assembly. Every drive goes through an extensive series of load testing.

Common signs of faulty valves include slow or erratic movement of actuators, excessive noise or vibration in the system, leakage of fluid from the valve or the actuator, loss of pressure or flow in the circuit, and overheating of the fluid or the components.

Control valves are a crucial component of any hydraulic system. Responsible for controlling the flow, pressure and direction of hydraulic fluids, they are essential for ensuring that fluid flow stays at a set point in order to ensure optimal performance of the machine.

As a result, if there is a fault or failure with a control valve this can have damaging impacts on the operation of the system and present potential health hazards.

There are many different types of hydraulic control valves, configured to suit the requirements of each system. The size and complexity of the system will determine how many valves are needed, and which types of valves are required.

Without the right valve selection, or a malfunctioning valve, the hydraulic system would struggle to function. Whilst it’s important to perform regular maintenance of your system to prevent failures, it’s also crucial to be able to spot the telltale signs that something may be wrong.

Common symptoms of control valve faults are, change in pressure, internal leaking, eternal leaking, valve sticking, valve failure.
